Time flies when you are a parent. It seems like not too long ago we were celebrating my son’s first birthday. But in less than two months he will turn four, which means that I am not only on the hunt for toys for Christmas, but also for his birthday. So I have been reading a lot of blogs. That is the best way I learn about the toys out there. This made me think of all of the toys that have been a hit with my son. Some toys I expected to be a hit and others surprised me.

Preparing for Holiday Gift Shopping

As Black Friday and the rest of the holiday shopping season nears, I thought I would share the toys my son has enjoyed as a three year old. Finding toys for two and three year olds is tough since you want to make sure that there are no small pieces they will put in their mouth. Although every kid gravitates to different toys, I can tell you what toys my son liked and what made each a hit for him.

If you are on the hunt for toys for a three year old boy (or girl), check out the list below for some ideas.

Clockwise: Playskool Heroes Mega Mighties Hulk, Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids, Picasso Tiles Magnetic Tiles, Boley Dinosaur Set. Images from Amazon.com
Clockwise: Talking Spider-Man Action Figure, WowWee Indoor Slide, Terra by Battat Jungle World Bucket. Images from Amazon.com

Gift Ideas for a Three-Year Old Boy

  1. Picasso Tiles Magnetic Building Blocks – Magnetic tiles are a staple in my son’s playtime. I love them because they help him learn how to build various things. He spends a lot of time playing with them because the options are endless and its pretty fun to play with them, even for me. I first bought him a small box that builds a rocket, but later added more tiles which helped him to expand his building skills. He has the 36-piece Magnetic Building Block Quarter Round and Window Set, but since it is out of stock I linked a similar one. It is such a great toy that I am thinking of getting him more tiles. Price: You can find sets in various price ranges, starting at $17.99.
  2. Boley Jumbo Dinosaur Sets – I will give credit to my husband for finding these dinosaur sets. They were a hit when he got them when he was two years old and they are still a huge hit. He loves these dinosaurs and treats them like his prized possessions–always looking for them and taking care of them. The dinosaurs may seem simple, but they look great, are made of soft rubber and are lightweight. When my son was two, it was hard to find dinosaurs that were not hard or age-appropriate. These dinosaurs were perfect. My son is so attached to them that when he accidentally left his T-Rex behind during a trip, we had to plan a quick replacement. Price:  $34.95 for a 5-piece set.
  3. Playskool Heroes Marvel Mega Mighties Action Figures – By the time my son was close to turning three he began to like superheroes. We couldn’t wait to get him the traditional action figures until we realized that they were all pretty much for older kids. That is when I found these action figures. Although they are made of hard plastic and kind of clunky, there no small pieces to worry about. Each action figure also moves around in various parts so that it can be positioned standing in various ways. They also stand up very well since the feet are big and flat. Price: Each action figure varies in price on Amazon. For example, I paid $6.67 for Captain Marvel and the most for Captain America at $29.96. Though the Playskool Heroes Captain America was oddly higher than all of the other action figures. It may depend on the seller and the demand for it.
  4. Amazon Fire HD Kids – When we purchased this tablet, we did not realize how much it was going to be a part of my son’s life. He is not glued to it, but he likes to use it to play games. What I really like about this tablet is that there are a lot of apps that he uses to draw, play music, play games, etc. We set the age so that he only sees media for his age group. But you can delete an app if you do not like it. We are pleasantly surprised with the tablet and have had no issues with it. Price: It is regularly $139.99 but it on sale right now for $69.99—almost half!
  5. Marvel Spider Man Talking Action Figure – I mentioned earlier that the traditional action figures are mainly for older kids. That is true except for one action figure–the Spider Man Talking Action Figure. I don’t know why this is the only action figure that is 3-year old friendly, but my son was thrilled when he got it for his birthday. The phrases it says are also kind of funny which gives the action figure a lot of character. When you press the button on his wrists they make the sound of a web being thrown. It also comes with two web sticks that you can insert and push out when the button is pressed. It is pretty cool, but we were too afraid that our son may put them in his mouth so we only allow him to use them with us present. Price: This action figure costs $35.88.
  1. WowWee Pop2Play Indoor Slide – If you have an active child like mys on, this slide is great. My son loves sliding on it various ways and sliding his toys down it. This slide opens in seconds and easily stores under the bed or in a closet. When it is stored, he doesn’t forget about it. He asks me to get it. It is great if you have a small living space or for rainy day, but I love that it provides him with physical exercise inside our home. Price: This slide is only $30!
  2. Terra by Battat Jungle World – Like most toddlers, my son loves animals. When I gave him this bucket of jungle animals, he was like a kid in a candy store. The bucket comes with over 60 animals and accessories to create a wildlife refuge. My son gets a thrill out of dumping all of the animals out of the bucket when he is going to play with them. He just loves grouping the animals and playing pretend. Bonus: He loves to put them back in the bucket when he is done! My son also has the Prehistoric World dinosaur bucket, which he equally loves. I highly recommend that one as well. Price: $18.99 (Jungle World Bucket) $17.88 (Prehistoric World).

I know searching for age-appropriate toys that your kids will like is hard. So I hope this list helps you in your search.
